Choosing a College: Where to Begin

Finding the right college can be daunting when you consider there are about 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the United States. That’s why starting early is important, so you have time to consider your options. For most people it means starting during your junior year in high school.

Jay Matthews, author of Harvard Schmarvard, says, “The best college to attend is the one that looks like an adventure, a place that will take you where you have always wanted to go. The worst college to attend is the one your friends say you cannot turn down.”

Begin by asking these questions, then look for colleges that meet your criteria:
  • Do I want a big school where I can be anonymous or a small school where people can get to know me?
  • Do I want to be close to home or farther away?
  • Do I want a big city or something smaller?
  • Warm climate or cold?
  • What do I want to study?
  • Will I be able to participate in sports, music or other activities?
  • Will there be opportunities to do research or study abroad?
  • Does the school have programs that will help me get into graduate school?
  • What does the school offer in the way of religious life?
  • Does the college reflect my values?

One question you should NOT ask right away is: “Can I afford it?”

While going to college can be expensive, colleges work with students and their families to make going there affordable. At most colleges the majority of students receive some form of financial assistance.
